Defining Worship (Part 1): How large is the box?
I drew this picture a while back when you couldn't go to an evangelical church service without hearing someone trying to cover Matt Redman or Delirious. Come to think of it, maybe you still can't. Now I like that stuff just fine, but I couldn't help but think about how it's just a drop in an ocean of music. I've spoken with young Christians who have actually had no exposure to any other kind of worship service. Whoa. When I look at the patterns of worship in the Old Testament, I don't even see a whole lot of music. Worship must be much larger than that!

On the other hand, you can't make worship TOO large or it loses all of its meaning. I've heard some people say that our whole lives should be a worship unto the Lord. Well, sure, I agree with that, but the word is now of no use anymore. Standing and singing a hymn of adoration to Jesus has GOT to be more worshipful than eating my breakfast cereal in the morning or the word has no potency.

So how large is the box above? What about the relative size of the music circle? This is one angle I hope to explore. I think I'm safe in saying that the little blue blip is the right size though! Now crank up that Vineyard-covering-Redman-covering-Martin Smith on "Did you feel the mountains tremble?" and get back to work!

Hmmm, have to think about that one. I suppose actually defining worship is like trying to define God?

Well, in some way it is. God is beyond our understanding. Worship is a particular form of relating to God. Because God is in the "equation" or worship, so to speak, then agreed, we can't totally understand worship either.

However, it's a word we use all the time when we communicate with each other. Some people mean one thing, some something a little bit different, and others something very different. But we all spell it the same way. This is a breakdown in communication. There are literally thousands of Christian denominations, some of which do NOT get along with each other. What is the one of the most common differences? Worship "style" in their particular community. I think confusion about what worship is has often divided the people of God. My understanding of it in the past has cut me off from certain people too.

Diversity is a good thing! But hostility toward other Christians is a bad thing. Can we define worship in a way that our brothers and sisters in Christ are also worshiping? Or are they "doing it wrong"? When you phrase it like that, most Christians will say, "Well of course what they are doing is OK, I guess. I, um, we, just like to do it this way.", but is that how we actually live?

Are there some things that are NOT worship, that maybe we are including under that umbrella that actually belong somewhere else? My goal is exploring the definition is to communicate more graciously with other Christians and to worship MORE by directing my attention more to God and away from the particulars. I think I'm still hung up on the particulars. I don't think I'm alone. :)
